LON-CAPA for Administrators

Recent years have seen a consolidaton of the commercial closed-source course management system market which effectively led to a monopoly. LON-CAPA is open-source and free. There are no licensing fees or restrictions, and all components of the system are open. LON-CAPA was developed by universities and with support by foundations, and while commercial hosting and support options are available, it can be operated on-site with "no strings attached."

The LON-CAPA project exists since 1993, and today is backed up by a consortium, which ensures the sustainability of the project and ensures that future directions are in line with the open philosophy of the system. LON-CAPA is scalable and proven to be machine-room-ready. It integrates well into campus IT infrastructure, even with legacy systems. It offers all standard course management and collaboration features of a modern course management system, and its learning content management functionality ensures long-term return on institutions' investments into online learning assets.
