LON-CAPA is open-source freeware covered by the GNU General Public License . All code is available openly and can be modified and adapted. LON-CAPA implements a number of stubs to plug into the institutional infrastructure and allows for site-specific modification of the documentation files, helpdesk integration, and branding.

LON-CAPA is mostly implemented within Apache using modperl and uses a number of standard open-source tools and packages.

The LON-CAPA core group provides the production releases of LON-CAPA, with usually two major releases per year.
