Example: Color Mixing

Question:

Suppose you have a red and a blue filter. What color would you get if you put white light through first the red and then the blue. On the other hand, what would you get if you added the light from the red to that from the blue filter?

Answer:

The red filter lets through only red, the blue only blue so no light makes it through. However if you mix the light from the red and the blue filter you get magenta.

Question:

Suppose you have a red and a yellow filter. What color would you get if you put white light through first the red and then the yellow. On the other hand, what would you get if you added the light from the red to that from the yellow filter?

Answer:

The red filter lets through only red, and the yellow lets through red and green . If you mix the light from the red and the yellow filter you get an orange color which two parts red and one part green.
