Meeting
Minutes Jan. 17th, 2007
Announcements
- MSU legal reviewed the proposed changes by SFU to the membership
agreement, e.g., removing the phrase "governed under the laws
of the State of Michigan." The changes have been approved. Now
we need to find a venue for signing the agreement.
- Two grant proposals involving LON-CAPA got submitted in the last
week:
- development of a geology concept inventory with some enhancements to LON-CAPA
functionality (programmer time: customized standalone version and enhancements
to the statistics functionality) - MSU-based, Kortemeyer Co-PI
- LON-CAPA for engineering education in Germany - Wolfenbuettel-based, Kortemeyer
Co-PI
- (one grant proposal for physics-content development still pending after seven
months - MSU-based, Kortemeyer PI)
Voting Items
- Cluster membership: We have an application by Oceanside High School
(http://www.oside.k12.ca.us/),
domain "oside". They'll devote a Dell 2650 (rack-mounted server). Technical
contact is their district network administrator, initiating teacher shows up
on their web pages as faculty, I verified the email address. I move to connect
them.
Seconded and approved
- Since LON-CAPA version 2.3 was released, I move to contact any site
that is running 2.1 or less, and ask them to update their machines
before June, together with an offer of assistance.
Seconded and approved
Suggested to point out that by August, un-maintained machines will be
disconnected from cluster.
Updates (01/30/07):
- All universities contacted
- Three promised to upgrade in May (will send reminder)
- One stated they will do asap (will send reminder)
- One school still running 1.3 on Fedora Core 2. We have root access
to machine, offered to send operating system CDs. Disconnect in August
if not upgraded.
Discussion Items
- SSL certificates: could we find out if the LON-CAPA Consortium would
be able to purchase SSL certificates from UIUC?
This is a no go, there can only be a single trust point per domain,
so
if we were to provide a cert for something in the *.msu.edu range we
would have to be the sole registrar of all SSL certs there.
- Conference website: need to find out if we can use an e-commerce
solution from UIUC to setup the conference website.
Alejandra has access now to the MSU server, ATLAS is ready for e-commerce.
- I tried to get commercial sponsorship for teacher travel to our conference,
but this appears to have gone nowhere. Any ideas for how to help getting
K-12 teachers to the venue? One idea for Michigan teachers was to get
a bus - but that also costs money.
No idea.
- Updates on UIUC programmer hire?
Update (01/30/07): No applicants fullfilling all criteria yet, widen
criteria and scope.
